Small businesses within the APEC member economies are thriving and connecting to the regional and global market with assistance from the APEC SME working group.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) employ over half of the workforce in APEC member economies.

Sharon Kenatsi tells her story of the opportunity APEC has provided her with to expose her handicraft.

It all begun from necessity drive to preserving traditional arts and crafts from old villagers, Sharon Kenatsi's handicraft business grew also motivated her to help jobless locals in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

"Young girls back at home are unemployed but gifted with handicraft skills.

"They have potentials of earning incomes while preserving their arts and cultures through their handicraft.

I encouraged them by buying their products and reselling them outside," said Kenatsi.

She said Bougainville Pride Arts and Crafts Limited's products are uniquely made and the raw materials for production derives from the natural surroundings such as coconut, pandanus leaves and seashells.

These are use for weaving baskets, mats and even jewelleries amongst other products we sell.

"This is a home-based business and the exposure at an international level is all I need.

"APEC meeting has given me the opportunity to showcase my products."

"I hope to establish contacts with potential buyers locally and internationally to sell my products."

APEC SME provides opportunity for small businesses to prosper through its member economies. In Kenatsi's case she also gets the support of APEC in the preservation of Bougainville's traditional arts and crafts.
