International delegates in PNG for the first APEC Senior Officials Meeting

12/03/2018

APEC Protocol Officers in Papua New Guinea received 1,700 international delegates attending the First Senior Officials Meeting (SOM1) and Related Meetings in Port Moresby.

APEC Protocol Officers in Papua New Guinea received 1,700 international delegates attending the First Senior Officials Meeting (SOM1) and Related Meetings in Port Moresby.

According to APEC 2018 Papua New Guinea Coordination Authority Protocol Manager Richard Gogo, protocol has been on par since the first day of arrival as interagency support put in a hands-on approach.

"So far it has been good, we've been working with the government agencies in particular Department of Foreign Affairs, PNG Customs Authority, PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority and the National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority (NAQIA).

"Those three organizations have been cooperating including National Airports Corporation (NAC) with its own protocol and security team at the airport facilitating smooth arrivals.

"So far so good at this stage, me and my team are quite happy with surface movements who provided transportation and facilitating them from arrivals to their hotels," he continued," Mr Gogo said.

He said that even with the smooth processing of the incoming delegates, there were lessons learnt and the obvious one being the issuing of baggage tags for easy identification.

He said a handful of delegates arrived without their luggage and this resulted in delay in them attending their meetings, as most require transit and transfers.

He added that this matter was resolved by the Airlines operator having an efficient system which enabled the quick tracing of delegates luggage.

"A system in place which links up all the airlines was able to detect the luggage and allow airport officers to identify and pass it on to the owners," he said.

Mr Gogo further said the total number of delegates that arrived last week participated in the cluster of meetings and those that arrived recently will participate in the Senior Officials meeting.

He said there were no security issues for the incoming and outgoing international delegates and all travelled as per their arrival and departure schedules as arranged.

"The overwhelming assistance provided by the officers at the Jacksons International Airport gives an assurance that we are capable of working as a team," Mr Gogo said.
