An advocate for women in agriculture has expressed her appreciation for the inclusion of Women in Agriculture and Fisheries in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) after 25 years.

Lae based founder and President for PNG Women in Agriculture (PNGWiA) Maria Linibi showed her appreciation during the meeting on Policy Dialogue on Women in Agriculture and Fisheries (PPFS) currently underway at the International Conference Centre in Port Moresby.

The PPFS is part of cluster of meetings in the APEC Third Senior Officials Meeting (SOM3) which commenced on Saturday, August 4, 2018.

Mrs Linibi advocates on policy matters on the struggles of women in agriculture and fisheries.

“I now feel blessed and really enriched and would like to thank the government of PNG through APEC in recognising that women can have an input in the development of this country”.

“Actually for the policy dialogue, we have talked about it for a very long time since the establishment of the Non-Government Organization.

“We’ve been pushing to get the government to recognise women in agriculture and fisheries because we have been in the non-government organization that has been pursuing the sector worldwide so that the world knows that there’s an agricultural sector in PNG and women are working, so we try to do that,” she said.

Mrs Linibi said her take back message to her organization and more than 10,000 of her women’s groups is to appreciate the government for recognising women’s involvement in the agriculture and fisheries sector.

For her organization, they train and teach women to use their networks by utilising Information Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance the sector.

She said her group (PNGWiA) is advocating for women to get back to using small smart phones, as it helps with information gathering and dissemination at the small holder level.
