Research is important for Policy

Research, Science and Technology is the only way forward for Policy makers and leaders when it comes to decision making in Papua New Guinea.

Research, Science and Technology is the only way forward for Policy makers and leaders when it comes to decision making in Papua New Guinea.

This was the message by the Minister for Climate Change, Environment and Conservation, John Pundari, during a panel discussion at the International Media Center today.

Minister Pundari said that leaders around the Pacific region and the world need to be well informed before making decisions.

“Without research, science and technology, leaders will make ill-informed decisions when drafting up policies,” he said.

He further said that information from research is available for leaders and policy makers to access, however the only challenge is whether leaders will listen and adhere to when creating policies.

“Such information from research is important and valuable as it has the power to affect the decisions that can seriously affect economies in the long term.’’

Minister Pundari added that most of the research, science and technology that are currently available have been collected more than 10 to 20 years ago.

“Such valuable information can be used for guidance and as solutions when approaching challenges during decision making.’’

He challenged all leaders around the world, especially those that will be present during the APEC summit to turn their focus on investment in the green energy sector.

He concluded by encouraging the leaders from the APEC economies to invest in agriculture, as it has a huge potential in PNG.
